and anti-american violence overseas there is late word tonight that the fbi has exposed an apparent homegrown terror plot in chicago involving an american teenager. the feds arresting an 18-year-old man who they say tried to detonate a car bomb outside a chicago bar. what he apparently didn't know was that the fbi was in on it from the start and the bomb was a fake. nbc's john yang is in our chicago newsroom with more. was anyone put at risk here? >> reporter: law enforcement officials stressed to nbc news that no one was ever at risk. the bomb was a phony. the suspect, 18-year-old adel daoud had no weapons training, no explosives training and is not a member or connected with any terrorist group, international terrorist group. according to this 35-page criminal complaint he was spotted by the fbi online talking jihad and talking about attacking americans. an undercover fbi agent got in touch with him. in the course of their discussions he came up with this plot to attack a target in chicago. and last night, according to the fbi, he was given a phony bomb, drove it in a jeep cheroke

in situation. both pittsburgh and fbi s.w.a.t. teams are on the scene of a hostage situation taking place on the 16th floor of a downtown highway. the cw brightsman company we understand is the setting for all of this. an ex-military man we're told walked into that office this morning where apparently he used to work. asked for one individual in particular and has now taken hostages. it is not absolutely clear that the one person that he named is the person who is being held hostage. there might be as many as two hostages. we're told no shots have been fired. unknown weaponry involved and police say they have a visual wall on the suspect the they know who he is. they have brought his mother to the building to help deal with negotiations but so far the hostage situation continues in downtown pittsburgh on the 16th floor of a high-rise. no shots fired so far. we'll keep you updated as the hour rolls along. >> we will. brand new stories and more breaking news. jon: good to see you, arthel the white house is it calling the assault in lib libya a terrorist attack. what is the political fallout

in downtown chicago friday night. the fbi hasn't named the bar but overnight, the owner of cal's bar and liquors told abc news he believes his bar was the target. it matches the description in the affidavit. authorities say daoud drove a jeep chair -- cherokey, parked it in front, and walked away. he didn't know the bomb was a fake. provided to him by undercover fbi agents. the bar's owner says approximately 15 undercover agents wearing ear pieces, surrounded the bar, arresting daoud on the spot. neighbors around daoud's suburban chicago home stunned at the allegations. according to the affidavit, undercover agents posing as radicals first started exchanging messages with daoud in may. court documents show daoud had allegedly been sharing information online about killing americans in a terrorist attack since october. in the criminal complaint, investigators say daoud made several postings on an internet forum. i hate the oppression of the usa and i'd like to do something to hurt it from the inside, he allegedly wrote. >> islamic extremists believe if you're not part of their philosop

: the fbi says 26-year-old kenneth w. smith jr. of philadelphia admitted making the telephone call to police that forced the us airways jet bound for dallas to turn around in midair. >> no comment, please. >> reporter: but that was the beginning of a high-flying drama that resulted in the arrest of a man who used to date smith's girlfriend. in the phone call, authorities say smith claimed that christopher schell, a passenger on the plane, was carrying a liquid explosive. a s.w.a.t. team surrounded the plane in philadelphia and removed schell in handcuffs but they found no explosives. steve mcneil was sitting next to him. >> going back to texas for a birthday. the company he was works for was paying for him to go back, said he just broke up with his girlfriend. >> reporter: schell told authorities that he believed his ex-girlfriend and smith were responsible for the phone call threat. schell was released without charges and allowed to fly on to dallas. the fbi arrested smith and charged him with giving false and misleading information about an explosive device. >> it's just an incredibly fool

children on board heading south. last night around 7:30, u.s. coastguard, police and even the fbi were involved in the search and were able to locate the boat off the coast near monterrey. authorities say they had to approach maffei very carefully because they weren't sure how the father would react. >> we asked him -- we wanted to provide him with water and a radio so that we could, so that we could have a conversation with him. and at that point, he said that he was willing to help us in any way that he could and we asked if we could put a boarding team on board. and he said that would be fine. >> reporter: at that point, police were able to board the boat and rescue the two children. coastguard commander don montoro says maffei was cooperative and did not resist arrest. no one was hurt in the rescue operation. maffei was taken into custody, where he could face kidnapping and theft charges. back here live at the bay, we don't know at what point the boat involved in the kidnapping will be brought back here and returned to the owner. we're told it is still in monterrey at the coastguar
